John M. Owen IV is Amb. Henry J. and Mrs. Marion R. Taylor Professor of Politics at the University of Virginia. A former Chair of the Politics Department, he is a Senior Fellow at UVa’s Institute for Advanced Studies in Culture and Miller Center of Public Affairs. His latest book, The Ecology of Nations: American Democracy in a Fragile World Order, was published by Yale University Press 2023. He is author of Confronting Political Islam (Princeton, 2015), The Clash of Ideas in World Politics (Princeton, 2010), and Liberal Peace, Liberal War (Cornell 1997). Owen has published articles in International Organization, International Security, International Studies Quarterly, International Affairs, International Politics, the European Journal of International Relations, Perspectives on Politics, and other academic journals, as well as in Foreign Affairs and the New York Times. A former Editor-in-Chief of Security Studies, he has held fellowships or visitorships at Harvard, Stanford, Princeton, Oxford, the Free University of Berlin, the WZB Berlin Social Science Research Center, and the University of British Columbia. In 2015 he received a Humboldt Research Prize (Germany)
