Cross-Disciplinary Encounters with Theology

Order and Disorder Book Launch

Scholars, authors, and contributors gathered at Wycliffe Hall, Oxford, to celebrate the launch of Order and Disorder: Nigel Biggar in Dialogue with the University, and to explore the meaning of a Christian doctrine of created order for scholarship across the disciplines.

The video plays from YouTube.

About the gathering

GFI partnered with Langham Publishing, the Oxford Pastorate and Developing a Christian Mind (DCM) to host a launch event at Wycliffe Hall for Order and Disorder: Nigel Biggar in Dialogue with the University. The second volume in GFI’s Cross-Disciplinary Encounters with Theology series, the book brings moral theology into conversation with Christian scholars across the world’s research universities, who consider the tensions between order and disorder in contemporary life and scholarship.

The evening opened with a conversation between Lord Biggar and Prof. Terry Halliday, Convenor of GFI, on the salience of order for Christian scholarship. A hybrid panel and Q&A followed, chaired by Dr. Bethan Willis of the Oxford Pastorate. Contributors and scholars from theology, philosophy, nanomaterials, and medicine joined the discussion. Refreshments and time for conversation closed the event.

Scholars said

“The biggest problems faced by humanity—climate catastrophe, the breakdown of international orders, tragedies of abject poverty and civil strife, among many others—require transdisciplinary approaches which engage multiple systems of knowledge... In Order and Disorder, worldwide disciplinary experts from the natural sciences and engineering, social sciences and health, law and international relations, the fine arts, humanities, and linguistics, grapple with today’s ‘wicked’ problems of order and disorder in intellectually rigorous conversations in which differences are addressed respectfully and shared viewpoints are refined critically.”
— Andrew Briggs, Professor Emeritus of Nanomaterials, University of Oxford, and Fellow of Wolfson College, Oxford
“Order and Disorder is a bold and timely contribution to contemporary Christian scholarship... rigorously analytic yet remains genuinely redemptive.”
— Osam Temple, Society of Christian Scholars, Africa
