The Virtues Graduate Seminar
The Oxford Pastorate and Oxford’s student society for Christian postgraduates held an evening of discussion on the vices and virtues of the academy, which students across several disciplines found stimulating and thought-provoking.

About the gathering
Working with Oxford University’s student society for Christian postgraduates, the Oxford Pastorate facilitated an evening of reading, disciplinary break-out groups and interdisciplinary discussion.
A core question focused on the vices and virtues of the academy, offering some illuminating responses. Students found the evening stimulating, making clear links to their work in social anthropology, literature, philosophy and the natural sciences. They reported that the evening left them with many questions to take away and consider further as they moved forward with their studies.
Graduate students from a variety of disciplines attended.

“I enjoyed reading Jennifer Herdt’s piece on Virtue as it prompted me to reflect on how I can apply teachings of the Bible to my academic life, and what Christians in academia can do to foster a more virtuous academic community. I also gained more perspectives and saw a broader picture of the virtues and vices of different disciplines through discussing the piece with my peers.”
“It was encouraging to listen to other students on how cardinal virtues and theological virtues shape their work, it made me more conscious of the ways goods can be committed to the Kingdom in everyday work life at Uni.”
